Spanish Vocabulary Quiz
This Spanish vocabulary quiz drills more than 500 common Spanish words and short phrases — greetings, numbers, colors, food, animals, verbs and more. It works as a quick Spanish language quiz for beginners and as a daily refresher: answer ten questions, keep your streak going, then review the words you missed.
How to play Spanish Vocabulary Quiz
- Choose a quiz type: Spanish → English (pick the meaning), English → Spanish (pick the Spanish word) or Type the Spanish.
- Pick a topic such as Greetings, Food, Animals or Common verbs — or play All topics.
- Each round has 10 questions. A right answer is worth 10 points, and every answer in a row adds a streak bonus (up to 20 points a question).
- Nouns are shown with their article — el for masculine, la for feminine — so you learn the gender with the word.
- A word counts as learned once you have answered it correctly twice and got it right the last time. New rounds favour words you have not learned yet.
- Words you miss go on your review list. Use Review missed words to practise just those until they stick.
Controls
- Tap or click an answer, or press 1–4 on a keyboard.
- In typing mode, type the Spanish and press Enter. The á é í ó ú ñ ü buttons insert accented letters.
- Press Enter (or tap Next question) to move on. Tap 🔊 to hear a word; the sound button in the toolbar mutes it.
Tips
- Learn nouns with their article: say la mesa and el libro, not just mesa and libro. Watch for exceptions like el día, el mapa and la mano.
- Start with Spanish → English to recognise words, then move to English → Spanish and finally typing, which is the best test of real recall.
- Short, daily rounds beat long cram sessions. Ten questions a day adds up to the whole word bank in a few weeks.
- Say each word out loud after you hear it. Spanish spelling is very regular, so once you know the sounds you can read almost any word.
FAQ
What is the best way to learn Spanish vocabulary?
Little and often. Study a small group of words by topic, test yourself instead of just re-reading, and come back to the words you got wrong. Retrieval practice and spaced review — exactly what the missed-word review does here — help words move into long-term memory far better than reading a list.
How many Spanish words do I need to know?
Around 1,000 of the most common words covers a large share of everyday conversation, and 2,000–3,000 words lets you follow most day-to-day speech and simple texts. The 500+ words in this quiz are a solid beginner foundation to build on.
Do I have to type the accents?
No. Typing mode accepts answers without accents (for example cafe for café or nino for niño) and then shows you the correct spelling. Accents do matter in real writing, though: sí means “yes” while si means “if”, so it is worth learning them.
Is this Spanish from Spain or Latin America?
Mostly words used everywhere. Where the two differ, both are accepted when you type — for example el jugo and el zumo (juice), or la computadora and el ordenador (computer). Pronunciation uses a Spanish voice from your device, if it has one.
