State Capitals Quiz
How well do you know the 50 state capitals? This state capitals quiz goes from Montgomery to Cheyenne — and many capitals are not the biggest city in the state.
How to play State Capitals Quiz
- Choose a quiz type: State → Capital, Capital → State, or Abbreviation → State.
- Pick multiple choice (four options) or type the answer yourself.
- Filter by region — Northeast, Midwest, South or West — or play all 50 states.
- Play a round of 10 or 20 questions, or every state in the region. Your best score for each setup is saved.
- At the end, review the ones you missed and retry just those.
Controls
- Tap or click an answer, or press 1–4 on a keyboard.
- In type-in mode, type your answer and press Enter to check it.
- Press Enter (or tap Next question) to move on.
Tips
- Watch for the big-city trap: the capital of New York is Albany, of California Sacramento, of Illinois Springfield and of Texas Austin.
- Learn one region at a time with multiple choice, then switch to type-in for the real test.
- Use Retry missed after each round. Repeating the few you got wrong is the fastest way to learn all 50.
- Pair look-alikes in your head: Columbus (Ohio) and Columbia (South Carolina), Charleston (West Virginia) and Charlotte (not a capital).
FAQ
How many state capitals are there?
Fifty — one for each US state. Washington, D.C. is the national capital but is not a state, so it is not part of the quiz.
Which state capitals are hardest?
Most people miss the ones that are not the largest city: Harrisburg (Pennsylvania), Frankfort (Kentucky), Pierre (South Dakota), Jefferson City (Missouri), Carson City (Nevada) and Olympia (Washington).
How strict is type-in mode?
It is forgiving: capital letters and punctuation do not matter, “St. Paul” and “Saint Paul” both count, and a small typo in a longer name is accepted as long as it is not the name of a different state or capital.
How are the regions divided?
The quiz uses the four regions of the US Census: Northeast (9 states), Midwest (12), South (16, including Delaware and Maryland) and West (13, including Alaska and Hawaii).
