Euchre Online
Euchre is a fast partnership trick-taking game played with just 24 cards. The jacks become the most powerful cards in the deck once trump is chosen, and a bold player can try to win every trick alone.
How to play Euchre Online
- Four players in two teams; your partner sits across from you. The deck has only the 9, 10, J, Q, K and A of each suit. Everyone gets five cards and one card is turned up.
- Round 1: starting left of the dealer, each player may make the up card's suit trump ("order it up") or pass. If someone orders it up, the dealer adds the up card to their hand and discards one card.
- Round 2: if all four pass, the up card is turned down and each player may name any other suit as trump. If everyone else passes, the dealer must choose a suit.
- The jack of trump (right bower) is the highest card, followed by the other jack of the same color (left bower), which counts as a trump card. Then A, K, Q, 10, 9 of trump.
- The player left of the dealer leads. Follow suit if you can; otherwise play anything. The highest trump wins the trick, or the highest card of the suit led if no trump was played.
- The team that chose trump (the makers) needs at least 3 of the 5 tricks: 3 or 4 tricks score 1 point, all 5 score 2. If they fail, they are euchred and the other team scores 2.
- The maker may go alone: their partner sits out, and winning all five tricks scores 4 points.
- The first team to 10 points wins.
Controls
- Use the buttons to order up, pick up, pass or name a suit. Tick Go alone before choosing to play without your partner.
- When you are the dealer and pick up the up card, tap the card you want to discard.
- Tap or click a card to play it; cards you cannot legally play are dimmed.
Tips
- Three trump cards including a bower is usually enough to order up, especially when your partner is the dealer.
- Think twice before ordering up a jack to an opponent who is dealing: you hand them the right bower.
- When your partner is already winning the trick, play your lowest card and save your strength.
- Leading the right bower early pulls trump from the opponents and protects your off-suit aces.
FAQ
How do you play euchre?
Four players in two partnerships each get five cards from a 24-card deck (9 through ace). Players take turns ordering up the turned card as trump or naming another suit, then play five tricks, following suit when they can. The team that chose trump must win at least three tricks.
What are the rules for scoring in euchre?
The team that called trump scores 1 point for three or four tricks and 2 for all five. If it takes fewer than three tricks it is euchred and the other team scores 2. A player who goes alone and wins all five tricks scores 4. The first team to 10 points wins.
What happens if everyone passes twice?
This version uses "stick the dealer": in the second round the dealer cannot pass and must name a trump suit.
Which suit does the left bower belong to?
Once trump is set, the left bower is a trump card in every way. It does not count as its printed suit, so it cannot be used to follow that suit.
Is the game saved?
Yes. Your hand, the trump call and the score are kept in your browser, so a reload resumes the same hand.
