Fill-In Puzzles
A fill-in puzzle is a crossword with the answers already given. Your job is to work out where each word goes, using word lengths and the letters where words cross. Every puzzle is generated fresh and checked to have exactly one solution.
How to play Fill-In Puzzles
- The word list on the side holds every word in the grid, grouped by length. One word is already filled in to get you started.
- Tap a square to choose a space (tap again to switch between across and down), then tap a word of the right length to place it.
- A word can only go where it agrees with the letters already crossing that space. Placed words are crossed off the list.
- Spaces that get filled entirely by crossing words count as placed automatically, as long as they spell a word on the list.
- Fill the whole grid to win. Check shows misplaced words in red, Hint places one correct word, and Remove word clears the selected space.
Controls
- Tap or click a square, then a word in the list.
- Keyboard: Tab or the up and down arrows move between spaces, Backspace removes the word in the selected space.
Tips
- Start with lengths that appear only once: there is only one word that can go there.
- Then follow the crossings out from the starter word. Each new word gives you letters that narrow down the next space.
- When two words of the same length could fit, look at which letters they put into the crossing spaces.
FAQ
How do you solve a fill in puzzle?
Count the squares in each space and match it with the words of that length. Begin with the given word and with lengths that have only one word, then use the letters where words cross to place the rest. Keep going until every word is in the grid.
Do fill-it-in puzzles have one solution?
Ours do. After building each grid, our solver checks that the word list fits in exactly one way; if it finds a second way, it gives you an extra starter word.
