Codeword Puzzles
A codeword is a crossword with no clues. Every square holds a number from 1 to 26, and each number stands for one letter. Start from the few letters you are given and decode the whole grid.
How to play Codeword Puzzles
- Every number in the grid stands for one letter, and every letter has only one number. The same number always means the same letter.
- A few numbers are already solved for you. They are filled in everywhere they appear and shown in the code key.
- Tap a square (or a number in the code key), then type or tap a letter. It fills in every square with that number at once.
- All the across and down entries are ordinary English words. Use the letters you know to guess the words, which reveal more numbers.
- Decode every number to win. Check marks wrong letters in red, Hint solves the selected number, and Show answer reveals the grid.
Controls
- Tap a square or a number in the code key, then a letter on the keypad.
- Keyboard: type letters, Backspace or Space erases, arrow keys, Tab or Enter jump to the next unsolved number.
Tips
- Look for short words with one missing letter: there are usually only a few possibilities.
- Double letters are clues. Two of the same number side by side are often EE, OO, LL, SS or TT.
- Numbers that appear often are likely to be E, A, R, T, O or S. Rare ones are often letters such as J, Q, X or Z.
- Keep an eye on the keypad: letters you have already used are dimmed, which narrows down what is left.
FAQ
How do you solve a codeword puzzle?
Start with the given letters and write them in wherever their numbers appear. Look for entries that are almost complete and guess the word, then put its new letters into the code key. Each new letter fills in squares across the grid, so the puzzle opens up quickly.
Is there a daily codeword?
Yes. Switch Mode to Daily codeword for a medium puzzle that everyone gets on the same day, with its own streak.
Does every codeword have one answer?
Yes. After building each grid, our solver checks that only one set of everyday words fits. If two answers were possible, it gives you an extra starter letter.
Are these codeword puzzles free?
Yes, every puzzle is free, and new ones are generated whenever you like. Your progress is saved in your browser.
