Pixel Art Maker
A simple, free pixel art maker that works on phones and computers. Pick a grid size, choose your colors and draw square by square, then download your creation as a crisp PNG. Your drawing is saved automatically, so you can come back to it later.
How to play Pixel Art Maker
- Choose a canvas size from the menu: 8×8 and 16×16 are great for icons and small sprites, 32×32 and 48×48 for bigger scenes.
- Pick a color from the palette, or tap Custom to mix any color you like. Colors you mix are kept in a recent row.
- Use the Pencil to paint pixels (drag to draw lines), the Eraser to clear them, Fill to flood an area of one color, and the Picker to grab a color from your drawing.
- Turn on Mirror to draw symmetrical art: everything you draw is copied left/right, top/bottom or into all four corners.
- Made a mistake? Undo and Redo step through your changes. When you are happy, press Download PNG to save a scaled-up image with a transparent background.
Controls
- Tap / click and drag on the canvas to draw. With a mouse, the right button erases.
- Keys: B pencil, E eraser, G fill, I color picker, M cycle mirror mode
- Ctrl/Cmd+Z undo, Ctrl/Cmd+Y or Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+Z redo
Tips
- Start with the outline in a dark color, then fill the inside with the bucket. It is much faster than painting every square.
- Use two or three shades of each color: a lighter one where the light hits and a darker one for shadows.
- Characters and faces look great with left/right mirror switched on.
- Keep your first pieces small. A 16×16 sprite is quick to finish and looks great when scaled up.
FAQ
How do I make pixel art?
Pick a small grid such as 16×16, sketch a simple outline with the pencil, fill the big areas with the bucket, then add a few lighter and darker shades for depth. Keep the number of colors low for a clean retro look.
Can I download my pixel art?
Yes. Press Download PNG and your picture is saved as a PNG file, scaled up so each pixel stays sharp. Empty squares become transparent.
Is my drawing saved?
Your current drawing, palette and tool are saved in this browser automatically. Reload the page and it is still there.
Can I make block-game style art here?
Yes. A 16×16 grid is the classic size for block-game style textures and item sprites, and the fill and mirror tools make them quick to draw.
