Typing Games for Kids
Gentle typing games for kids that teach real touch typing one step at a time. Start with your fingers on the home row, learn two new keys per lesson with a color-coded finger guide, then pop letter balloons to practice what you learned.
How to play Typing Games for Kids
- Rest your fingers on the home row: left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ;. Feel for the little bumps on F and J.
- Open Lesson 1 on the lesson map. The next key glows on the keyboard, and the colors show which finger to use: each finger has its own color.
- Type the letters shown. A wrong key does not move you forward, so take your time and find the right one. The rocket flies to the star as you go.
- At the end you get up to three stars: 95% accuracy and at least 8 words per minute earns three. Each lesson adds two new keys, from the home row to the top row, the bottom row, words and little sentences.
- Play 🎈 Letter Balloons any time: type the letter on each balloon to pop it before it floats away. Choose the speed and which lesson’s letters to use. If three balloons escape, the game ends.
Controls
- Type on a real keyboard (best), or tap the keys on the on-screen keyboard on a phone or tablet.
- On the lesson map, press Enter or Space to start the next lesson.
- Your lesson stars and an unfinished lesson are saved automatically.
Tips
- Look at the screen, not your hands. The glowing key shows where to go.
- After every key, let your fingers slide back home to the home row.
- Accuracy first, speed later. Typing slowly and correctly builds speed by itself.
- Short practice is best: one or two lessons a day is plenty for young typists.
- Use your thumb for the space bar.
FAQ
What age should kids start typing lessons?
Many children are ready around age 6 to 8, once they know their letters and their hands can comfortably reach the home row. Younger kids can still enjoy Letter Balloons on the slow speed to learn where the letters are.
Why start with the home row?
The home row (A S D F J K L ;) is where your fingers rest. Every other key is a short reach up or down from there, so learning it first makes all the other keys easier.
How are stars earned?
Three stars need 95% accuracy and at least 8 words per minute; two stars need 85% accuracy; finishing a lesson always earns at least one. You can replay any lesson to improve your stars.
Can kids use this typing game on a tablet?
Yes. The on-screen keyboard works by tapping, but a real keyboard is best for learning touch typing.
Is it free and safe?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no chat, and progress is saved only in your browser.
