Sight Word Games
Four quick sight word games for new readers. Hear a word and find it, spot the same word among look-alikes, fill in a missing letter or play sight word bingo. Every word is read aloud, and all five Dolch sight word lists are included.
How to play Sight Word Games
- Choose a word list: Pre-K (pre-primer, 40 words), K (primer, 52 words), Grade 1 (41 words), Grade 2 (46 words) and Grade 3 (41 words).
- Listen & find: the word is read out loud. Tap the matching word from four choices. With the sound muted, the word is shown so you can match it instead.
- Find the same word: look carefully! The other choices start with the same letter or look alike, like there, three and they.
- Missing letter: one letter is blank, like w_nt. Pick the letter that finishes the word.
- Sight word bingo: tap each called word on your card, or press Not on my card. Three or four marked in a row, across, down or corner to corner, is BINGO!
- Each right answer earns a star; finish a round with 90% right for three stars. Open See all words on the setup screen to review the list and hear any word.
Controls
- Tap or click a word, or press 1–4 on a keyboard.
- Press 🔊 to hear the word again. Read aloud in the toolbar turns the voice on or off.
- In bingo, tap the word on your card or press Not on my card.
- After a miss, press Next or Enter to keep going.
Tips
- Practice a few minutes every day. Sight words stick through many short repeats.
- Say the word out loud as you tap it, then use it in a short sentence.
- Move up to the next list once your child earns three stars in every game on the current one.
- Words that look alike (was and saw, on and no) are tricky for everyone. The Find the same word game is made for them.
FAQ
What are sight words?
Sight words are very common words that children learn to recognize at a glance instead of sounding out, like the, said and was. Many do not follow simple phonics rules, so they are practiced until they become automatic.
Which sight word lists are used?
The five classic Dolch lists: pre-primer, primer, first grade, second grade and third grade, 220 words in total. These lists are widely used in schools and are free for anyone to use.
How do you play sight word bingo?
Each player has a card of sight words. The caller reads one word at a time, and players mark it if it is on their card. The first to mark a full row, column or diagonal wins. Here the computer is the caller and reads every word aloud.
Does my child need to read to play?
No. In Listen & find and bingo, each word is spoken by your device’s built-in voice, so children practice matching sounds to printed words.
Can I use these sight word games in class?
Yes. They run in any browser, on a projector or tablets, with no sign-up. For whole-class bingo with printed cards, try classroom bingo.
