How to play Place Value Games
- Pick a grade: Grade 1 works with tens and ones (10 to 99), Grade 2 adds hundreds (to 999) and Grade 3 adds thousands (to 9,999).
- Count the blocks: a small cube is 1, a rod is 10, a flat square is 100 and a big cube is 1,000. Count each kind and type the number on the number pad.
- Digit value: one digit is underlined. Choose its value (the 4 in 347 is worth 40) or the name of its place (tens).
- Build the number: press + and − under each place to add blocks until they show the number, then press Check.
- Expanded form: read a sum like 300 + 40 + 7 and type the number it makes.
- Each right answer earns a star. Get 90% right for three stars, and your best stars for every setup are saved.
Controls
- Tap the answer buttons or press 1–4.
- Type numbers on the on-screen number pad or your keyboard; Enter checks.
- In Build the number, use the + and − buttons under each place, then Check.
- Press 🔊 to hear the question again; Read aloud in the toolbar mutes the voice.
Tips
- Count the biggest blocks first, then the next size down. The number of each kind is the digit for that place.
- A zero holds a place: 405 has 4 hundreds, 0 tens and 5 ones.
- Ten ones make a ten, ten tens make a hundred and ten hundreds make a thousand. Each place is worth ten times the place to its right.
- Read big numbers in chunks: 3,482 is three thousand, four hundred eighty-two.
FAQ
What is place value?
Place value is the value a digit has because of where it sits in a number. In 352, the 3 means 3 hundreds (300), the 5 means 5 tens (50) and the 2 means 2 ones.
What are base-ten blocks?
Blocks that show place value: a unit cube is 1, a rod of ten cubes is 10, a flat of ten rods is 100 and a large cube of ten flats is 1,000. They let children see why each place is worth ten times more.
What place value skills are taught in 2nd grade?
Second graders learn that three-digit numbers are made of hundreds, tens and ones, read and write numbers to 1,000 in standard and expanded form, and compare them. The Grade 2 level practices all of these.
What is expanded form?
Writing a number as the sum of the value of each digit: 2,506 = 2,000 + 500 + 6.
