Free Typing Test (WPM)
How fast do your fingers really move? This free typing test measures your words per minute (WPM). Type the words on screen as quickly and cleanly as you can, then see your speed, accuracy and a second-by-second chart of the run.
How to play Typing Speed Test
- Pick a test from the menu: a timed run (15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds), a fixed number of words (10, 25 or 50), or a full passage with punctuation.
- Start typing whenever you are ready — the clock only starts on your first keystroke.
- Letters turn solid when they are right and red when they are wrong. Use Backspace to fix mistakes before moving on.
- Your score is WPM: correctly typed characters divided by five, per minute. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong.
- Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct, so fixed mistakes still count against it.
- Your best speed for each test type is saved on this device.
Controls
- Type — on a phone, tap the text box to bring up the keyboard
- Backspace — fix the previous character
- Tab then Enter — restart with fresh text (or use the Restart button)
Tips
- Accuracy first: every wrong character lowers your WPM and costs time to fix, so a steady pace beats bursts.
- Keep your eyes a word or two ahead of the caret instead of on your hands.
- Use the 15-second test for warm-ups and the 120-second test to measure stamina.
FAQ
How is WPM worked out?
A "word" is counted as five characters, including spaces. We take the characters you typed correctly, divide by five, and scale that to one minute. Raw WPM uses every character, including mistakes.
What is a good typing speed?
Many adults type somewhere around 35–45 WPM. Reaching 60 WPM or more with high accuracy is fast, and over 80 WPM is excellent. Compare runs of the same test type, since short tests usually give higher numbers.
Why is my accuracy lower than the text looks?
Accuracy counts every keystroke, so a typo you later corrected still counts as an error. It rewards typing it right the first time.
