Match the Color
How good is your eye for color? Match the target shade using hue, saturation and lightness sliders. Each guess is scored by how different the two colors look to the human eye, not just by the numbers.
How to play Match the Color
- A target color appears on the left. Your color is on the right.
- Drag the Hue slider to pick the color family, Saturation for how vivid or grey it is, and Lightness for how light or dark it is.
- Press Lock in when you think they match. Your score for the round is out of 10, with a hint about what was off.
- In From memory, the target is shown for only three seconds, then hidden. Mix it from memory.
- A game has five colors, for a total out of 50. Your best total in each mode is saved.
Controls
- Drag the sliders (or use the arrow keys on a focused slider)
- Enter — lock in / next color
Tips
- Get the hue right first, then the lightness, then fine-tune saturation. Lightness errors are the easiest to see.
- Squint at both swatches: it hides small details and makes brightness differences jump out.
- In memory mode, name the color to yourself (“dusty teal”, “bright coral”). Words help you remember shades.
FAQ
How is the color match scored?
Both colors are converted to a color space designed around human vision and the distance between them is measured. Differences you can barely see still score about 9.5, while clearly different shades score much lower.
What do hue, saturation and lightness mean?
Hue is the color family (red, yellow, blue…), saturation is how vivid it is compared with grey, and lightness is how close it is to black or white.
Is there a faster color matching game?
Yes. Color Match is a 60-second game where you decide whether color words match their ink.
