Math 24: The 24 Math Game
The 24 math game is a quick-fire arithmetic puzzle: four numbers, four operations, one target. Every hand we deal has at least one way to make 24 — can you find it?
How to play 24 Math Game
- You get four numbers. Use each one exactly once, with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, to make 24.
- Tap a number, tap an operation, then tap a second number. The two are replaced by the answer, so four numbers become three, then two, then one.
- When the last number is 24, you have solved the hand. If it is not, use Undo or Reset and try another route.
- Fractions are allowed along the way: 8 ÷ 3 stays as 8/3 and can still be used.
- In Practice, solve hands in a row to build a streak. The Daily set has five hands, the same for everyone, against the clock.
Controls
- 1–4: pick a number (left to right) + − * /: operation
- Backspace or Z: undo R: reset H: hint Esc: clear selection
Tips
- Think about the factor pairs of 24: 1 × 24, 2 × 12, 3 × 8 and 4 × 6. Try to make one half of a pair from two numbers and the other half from the rest.
- If you have a 1, multiplying by it or dividing by it keeps a number unchanged, so it is a handy “spare”.
- Some hands need a fraction on the way, such as 3, 3, 8, 8: 8 ÷ (3 − 8 ÷ 3) = 24.
- Easy hands can always be solved without fractions or negative numbers. Hard hands use numbers up to 13.
FAQ
How do you play the 24 math game?
Look at the four numbers and combine them two at a time with +, −, × or ÷ until one number is left. Use every number exactly once. If the final result is 24, you win the hand.
Is every 24 hand solvable?
Not every set of four numbers can make 24 — 1, 1, 1, 1 cannot, for example. Our game checks every hand with a solver before dealing it, so every hand you see has at least one answer.
Can I use fractions or negative numbers?
Yes. Any intermediate result is allowed, including fractions such as 8/3 and negative numbers, as long as the final answer is exactly 24.
What is the Math 24 daily set?
Five hands, from easy to hard, that are the same for every player today. Solve them as fast as you can, share your time and keep a daily streak.
How do hints work?
A hint shows one good first step from where you are now. Hands solved with a hint do not add to your streak.
